Description:
For the illustrated edition of Goethe's play "Faust" (Paris: C. Motte, 1828). At table, Martha stands at left and male figure sits facing viewer; Mephistopheles, dressed in black with sword in scabbard and hat in hand, bows to Martha; in margins are sketches of oriental figures and animals (lions, elephants, horses, etc.).
