The cabinet has a rectangular hinged top. It opens to reveal an églomisé landscape on the inside of the lid, and an inlaid wood interior. The front of the cabinet has two paneled doors. The paneled doors enclose a fitted interior with 12 drawers, each decorated with an églomisé landscape, surrounding an architectural central door. The central interior door opens to reveal 11 tortoiseshell drawers.

The cabinet was formerly in the collection of Charles Kingsley Arter, Class of 1898. It came to Amherst College as part of a sizeable gift of fine art, decorative art, and antiquities from the collector's son, who was also an alumnus.
