Description:
Six silver spoons with upturned rounded handles and long rattail on the rounded bowls, which are marked with a crowned sun over "BA" for Joseph Barbut, and engraved with an eagle rising from a ducal coronet. Although each of the spoons is marked "BA," several of the spoons show traces of other marks and the date letter "M" for 1707-1708. Barbut married in 1690 and was free by redemption in 1703 when he entered his first mark (this example); he appears to have been a specialist spoon and fork maker in St. Martin's in the Fields.
