Description:
Large, leather-covered Bible from the Burt family, which is dated 1708 and inscribed with name of various members of the family, including possibly the Boston silversmith, John Burt (1692/93-1745/46); and "Bought att Amsterdam, Jan. 1716 for 13 gilders./ John Burtt / His Book August 1717 / Susanne Howland 1805 / Born 1752 died 1824 aged 72 / Bequested to Elizabeth Burt Brinekerhopp by Susanne Howland 1822." There is also a newspaper clipping quoting a will of Abigail Cheever, widow, dated 1750, probated 1753: "Abigail Burt was wife of John Burt, and their daughter Abigail married Nathaniel Howland of 1794, and is probably buried at Copp's Hill. See monument to Francis and Sarah (Burt) Shaw." Abigail Cheever (1691-1778) married John Burt in 1714, and their daughter Abigail Burt (1718-1766) married Nathaniel Howland, Jr. (1705-1766) of Plymouth, Massachusetts, in1739. The Howlands had seven children, including Susanna Howland (1752-1824).
