Description:
English delft circular plate with blue and purple decoration. The well has the initials "A R" for "Anne Regina" framing the half-length portrait of Queen Anne wearing a crown and holding an orb and sceptre, all encircled with blue bands. Queen Anne, who was the sister of Mary II and the younger daughter of James II, ascended the throne after the death of her brother-in-law, William III and reigned until 1714. Upon her death, succession passed to the Protestant Elector of Hanover, the German-speaking King George I. The rim is encircled with a blue banded, ermine border; and the base is marked with a blue "4". This plate is the same as one in the Victoria and Albert Museum collection, but the V&A plate has a plain base. Although fragments with the ermine border have been found in Bristol, F. Garner found a fragment in Lambeth with "A" and the tip of the sceptre and side of Queen Anne's head.
