Description:
Map depicting the Indian subcontinent. "L'INDE/ DE CA LE GANGE/ suivant les/ nouvelles observations/ de Messrs de l'Academie Royale/ des Sciences, etc,/ Augmentees de Nouveau./ A LEIDE,/ chez PIERRE VANDERAA/ Avec Privilege." Above plate mark in the upper right appears the number 88, referring to its place in an atlas. Map probably from Van der Aa's Nouvelle Atlas, published in parts between 1710 and 1729. The cartouche depicts elephants on one side with palm trees in the back, a large plinth piled with bolts of patterned textilesand an opened casket, and the left side there is a man in chains, and two structures which may house idols, men are bringing them gifts and bowing down.
