Label Text:
The title of this series and print are listed at top of the right margin. The artist's signature, which reads "Utagawa Kuninaga ga" ('drawn by Utagawa Kuninaga'), appears at middle-right. Beneath the signature are the address and name of the publisher Izumiya Ichibei, which reads: "Shiba Shinmeimae hanmoto Izumiya Ichibei jutsu" ('a technique of the publisher Izumiya Ichibei, Shiba Shinmeimae').

Uki-e, or "perspective prints," are Japanese woodblock prints that employ single-point perspective, thus reflecting the influence of Western art, especially engravings and etchings of famous sites. This is very evident in other prints by Kuninaga that are deliberate copies of European examples, such as his famous rendering of the Colossus of Rhodes (Boston MFA acc. no. 11.14993).
