Guercino was one of the most accomplished and prolific draftsmen of the Italian Baroque. He had a flair for dramatic lighting and composition and utilized bold brushwork and chiaroscuro to create energetic and accessible images. Most of his drawings were studies done in pen, ink, and wash, and were used to work out the compositions of his paintings. This drawing is presumably the earliest in a sequence of preparatory studies for a painting of Elijah Resuscitating the Shunammite’s Son, commissioned in 1633, now in the Arcivescovado, Milan (seen below).
